Hunting Areas and Conditions

  • Unit A (Mauna Kea Forest Reserve and GMA):
    • Season Dates: March 1 - April 15, 2023
    • Mammal hunting with rifles, muzzleloaders, handguns, and shotguns permitted above the treeline.
  • Unit G (Kaʻohe GMA):
    • Open for daily mammal hunting with archery.
  • Unit F (Puʻu Waʻawaʻa Forest Reserve):
    • All gates must remain closed. Closed to hunting in paddocks where cattle are located.
  • Unit E (Kīpuka ʻĀinahou):
    • Season Dates: March 1 - 31, 2023 (Archery only)
    • Mammal hunting allowed on weekends and State Holidays. The DHHL portion is closed.
  • Private Lands:
    • Season Dates: March 1 - April 15, 2023
    • Hunters must possess a valid hunting license, current turkey tags, and landowner permission.

Hunting Hours for All Areas

  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

Bag Limits, Tags, and Purchasing

  • Daily Bag Limit: Three bearded turkeys per hunter.
  • Season Bag Limit: Three bearded turkeys.
  • Turkey Tags Cost: $5 per tag for residents; $20 per tag for non-residents (non-transferable).
  • Tags must be securely affixed to the neck or tarsus of harvested birds immediately after the kill.
  • Tags bought online must be printed, protected in a resealable plastic bag, and secured with a rubber band.
  • Tags are available for purchase online and at select commercial vendors on the island of Hawaii.
