2023 Duck Hunting Zones and Dates

South Dakota Waterfowl Hunting Laws & Regulations

High Plains Zone

  • Dates: Oct. 14 - Jan. 18
  • Location: West of Boundary A
  • Boundary A Details: Extends from the SD-ND state line down through various highways, ending at the SD-NE state line.

Low Plains - North Zone

  • Dates: Sept. 23 - Dec. 5
  • Location: East of Boundary A and north of Boundary B
  • Boundary B Details: Runs east along U.S. Hwy 212 from its junction with U.S. Hwy 83 to the SD-MN state line.

Low Plains - Middle Zone

  • Dates: Sept. 23 - Dec. 5
  • Location: East of Boundary A, south of Boundary B, and north of Boundary C

Low Plains - South Zone

  • Dates: Oct. 28 - Jan. 9
  • Location: Within Boundary C
  • Boundary C Details: Begins at SD Hwy 47 and the SD-NE state line, then moves through various highways, concluding at I-29 and the SD-IA state line.

Boundary Definitions

  • Boundary A: Starts at the SD-ND state line, running south along U.S. 83 to U.S. 14, east on U.S. 14 to Blunt, and continues through several highways, finally stretching south on SD Hwy 47 to the SD-NE state line.
  • Boundary B: Begins at the junction of U.S. Hwy 83 and U.S. Hwy 212, then runs east on U.S. Hwy 212 to the SD-MN state line.
  • Boundary C: Commences at the junction of SD Hwy 47 and the SD-NE state line, then moves north on SD Hwy 47 to SD Hwy 44, and continues through several highways, eventually reaching south on I-29 to the SD-IA state line.

Migratory Bird Certificate Selection

When purchasing a Migratory Bird Certificate for the 2023-24 duck season, hunters must select one of the following two options for their daily duck limit. This choice will apply for the entire season. For more information and specific regulations, please consult the official GFP website.

Tier 1 (Traditional) Daily Limit

  • Ducks: 6 total, subject to the following specific species limitations:
    • Mallards: Maximum of 5 (of which only 2 may be hens).
    • Wood Ducks: Up to 3.
    • Scaup: 1.
    • Redheads: 2.
    • Canvasback: 2.
    • Pintail: 1.
  • Coots: 15.
  • Bonus Blue-winged Teal: 2 (only for the first 16 days of the season).
    • Bonus Period Dates:
      • Low Plains North and Middle Zones: Sept. 23 - Oct. 8
      • Low Plains South Zone: Oct. 28 - Nov. 12
      • High Plains: Oct. 14 - Oct. 29

Tier 2 (Three-Duck) Daily Limit

Ducks

3 of any species or sex (including mergansers).

Possession Limit

The possession limit for both tiers is three times the daily limit, adhering to the specific daily limit rules.

Shooting Hours

One-half hour before sunrise to sunset across all zones.

Non-Toxic Shot Requirement

To hunt waterfowl, hunters must use approved non-toxic shots. Specific details are provided in the “Non-Toxic Shot Regulations” section.

Antelope Island Restrictions

In the Antelope Island area on Lake Sharpe, the following restrictions are in place:

  • Decoys and Blinds: No waterfowl decoys or hunting blinds may be left in the area between sunset and 5 a.m.
  • Decoy Attendance: No waterfowl decoys may be left unattended between 5 a.m. and sunset.

Non-Toxic Shot

  • Required: Same regulations as under Duck Regulations.

Antelope Island Restrictions

  • Applies: Same as under Duck Regulations.

August Management Take (Resident Only)

  • Dates: Aug. 19 - 31
  • Daily Limit: 15 geese
  • Possession Limit: Unlimited
  • Open Area: Specific counties in South Dakota, including parts of Meade and Pennington counties, and several others listed on the official GFP site.

Unit 1

  • Dates: Sept. 1 - Dec. 16
  • Daily Limit:
    • Sept. 1-30: 15 geese
    • Oct. 1-Dec. 16: 8 geese
  • Possession Limit: Three times the daily limit.
  • Open Area: Includes multiple counties and specific portions of several counties detailed in the GFP regulations.

Unit 2

  • Dates: Nov. 6 - Feb. 18 (Areas not included in Unit 1 or Unit 3)
  • Daily Limit: 4
  • Possession Limit: Three times the daily limit.

Unit 3

  • Dates: Jan. 13 - 21, 2024 (Bennett County)
  • Daily Limit: 4
  • Possession Limit: Three times the daily limit.
  • Special Note: Bennett County is open to Canada and Cackling goose hunting from Oct. 21 - Dec. 24 by lottery license ONLY. All goose limits apply, but Canada and Cackling geese must be tagged immediately upon possession.

Youth Waterfowl Season 2023

Season Dates

  • Sept. 9 - 10

Hunting Unit

  • Statewide

Shooting Hours

  • One-half hour before sunrise to sunset.

Daily Limit

Ducks

  • Tier 1 (Traditional): Same as regular duck season (note: bonus blue-winged teal not allowed during youth season).
  • Tier 2 (Three-Duck): 3 ducks of any species or sex (includes mergansers).

Canada Goose

  • Unit 1: The daily limit is 15.
  • Units 2 and 3: The daily limit is 4.

Possession Limit

  • Twice the daily limit, taken according to a daily limit.

Non-Toxic Shot

  • Requirement: An approved non-toxic shot is required to hunt waterfowl.

Other Requirements

  • Open to Residents and Nonresidents: The youth hunter must be properly licensed to hunt waterfowl in the state unless participating in a Resident Mentored Hunt scenario.
  • Age Limit: Youth may not have reached age 18 by the first day of the season.
  • Adult Supervision: An adult (18 or older) must accompany the youth. The adult may not hunt ducks but may participate in other open seasons, including the Canada Goose Season.
  • Licensing for Nonresidents: Nonresident youth must have a Nonresident Waterfowl License with valid dates during Sept. 9 - 10 or a Nonresident Youth Waterfowl License to participate.
  • Federal Waterfowl Stamp: Not required if under the age of 16.
  • Additional Restrictions: All other restrictions are the same as during the regular waterfowl seasons.

White-Fronted Goose Hunting Regulations 2023

Season Dates

  • Sept. 30 - Dec. 12
  • Unit: Statewide

Daily Limit

  • 3 White-fronted geese

Possession Limit

  • Three times the daily limit, adhering to the rules of the daily limit.

Light Goose Hunting Regulations 2023-24

Season Dates

  • Sept. 30, 2023 - Jan. 12, 2024
  • Unit: Statewide

Daily Limit

  • 50 Light geese

Possession Limit

  • Unlimited
