Marine Conservation Areas and Preserves Description and Rules

1. Tatoosh Island

  • Description: Waters within one-quarter mile of Tatoosh Island.
  • Rule: Closed to harvest of sea cucumber and sea urchin.

2. Low Point

  • Description: Waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Low Point.
  • Rule: Closed to harvest of sea cucumber and sea urchin.

3. Southern Haro Strait

  • Description: Waters of Haro Strait between specified points.
  • Rule: Closed to harvest of sea cucumber and sea urchin.

4. Northern San Juan Channel

  • Description: Waters of San Juan Channel and Upright Channel within specified lines.
  • Rule: Closed to harvest of sea cucumber and sea urchin.

A. Yellow and Low Islands Preserve

  • Description: Tidelands and bedlands within 300 yards of Yellow Island and Low Island.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest.

B. Friday Harbor Preserve

  • Description: Tidelands and bedlands adjacent to San Juan Island within specified lines.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest.

C. Shaw Island Preserve

  • Description: Tidelands and bedlands within specified lines around Shaw Island.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest except for crabbing.

D. Argyle Lagoon Preserve

  • Description: Tidelands and bedlands enclosed by the inner spit of Argyle Lagoon.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest.

E. False Bay Preserve

  • Description: Tidelands and bedlands of False Bay on San Juan Island.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest.

F. Voluntary Whale Protection Zone

  • Description: Waters extending a quarter-mile from shore in specified areas.
  • Rule: No specific shellfish harvest restrictions.

5. Lummi Indian Reservation Closure

  • Description: Lummi Indian Reservation waters.
  • Rule: Closed to non-Indian fishing and/or access.

6. Deception Pass Octopus Protection Area

  • Description: Waters closed to the harvest of octopus.
  • Rule: Closed to the harvest of octopus.

7. Admiralty Head Marine Preserve

  • Description: Waters and bedlands below Extreme Low Water in specified area.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest except sea urchins and sea cucumbers.

8. Keystone Conservation Area

  • Description: Waters, bedlands, and tidelands from Extreme High Water out to specified distance.
  • Rule: Closed to fishing for, harvesting, and possession of fish and shellfish.

9. Edmonds Public Fishing Pier

  • Description: Waters inside specified lines around Edmonds Public Fishing Pier.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest except when fishing from the pier.

Brackett's Landing Shoreline Sanctuary Conservation Area

  • Description: Bedlands and tidelands owned by the city of Edmonds at Brackett's Landing Shoreline Sanctuary.
  • Rule: Closed to fishing for, harvesting, and possession of fish and shellfish except when fishing from the Edmonds Public Pier.

10. Carkeek Park Marine Preserve

  • Description: Specified area from coordinates to a sign at the beach.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest. Note signs at beach entrances.

11. Three Tree Point Octopus Protection Area

  • Description: Waters closed to the harvest of octopus.
  • Rule: Closed to the harvest of octopus.

B. City of Des Moines Park Conservation Area

  • Description: Waters designated as a conservation area.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest.

C. South 239th Street Park Conservation Area

  • Description: Waters designated as a conservation area.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest.

D. Des Moines Fishing Pier

  • Description: Waters within 100 yards of the Des Moines Public Fishing Pier.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest except when fishing from the pier.

E. Saltwater State Park Marine Preserve

  • Description: Specified waters, bedlands, and tidelands of Saltwater State Park.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest.

F. Redondo Beach Octopus Protection Area

  • Description: Waters closed to the harvest of octopus.
  • Rule: Closed to the harvest of octopus.

G. Dash Point Dock

  • Description: Waters within 100 yards of the Dash Point Dock.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest except when fishing from the pier.

H. Les Davis Fishing Pier

  • Description: Waters within 100 yards of the Les Davis Fishing Pier.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest except when fishing from the pier.

I. Les Davis Octopus Protection Area

  • Description: Waters closed to the harvest of octopus.
  • Rule: Closed to the harvest of octopus.

J. Colvos Passage Marine Preserve

  • Description: Area enclosed by specified lines in Colvos Passage.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest.

12. Marine Area 12

  • Description: Waters south of the Hood Canal Bridge.
  • Rule: Closed to harvest of octopus, sea cucumber, and sea urchin.

A. Waketickeh Creek Conservation Area

  • Description: Waters and bedlands from Waketickeh Creek out perpendicular to shore.
  • Rule: Closed to fishing for, harvesting, and possession of fish and shellfish.

B. Octopus Hole Conservation Area

  • Description: Waters, tidelands, and bedlands of Hood Canal in specified area.
  • Rule: Closed to fishing for, harvesting, and possession of fish and shellfish.

C. Sund Rock Conservation Area

  • Description: Waters, tidelands, and bedlands enclosed by specified lines around Sund Rock.
  • Rule: Closed to fishing for, harvesting, and possession of fish and shellfish.

13. Titlow Beach Marine Preserve

  • Description: Specified waters due west from a designated point to the outer harbor line.
  • Rule: Closed to all shellfish harvest.

B. Days Island Octopus Protection Area

  • Description: Area closed to the harvest of octopus.
  • Rule: Closed to the harvest of octopus.

C. Hale Passage

  • Description: Waters of Hale Passage and Wollochet Bay within specified lines.
  • Rule: Closed to harvest of sea cucumber and sea urchin.

D. Saltar's Point Conservation Area

  • Description: Tidelands owned by the town of Steilacoom at Saltar's Point Beach and the water column above.
  • Rule: Closed to fishing for, harvesting, and possession of fish and shellfish.
