Area 3 Regulations

Wyoming Area 3 Fishing Regulations

Area 3 encompasses various drainages including the Niobrara River, Cheyenne River, Stockade-Beaver Creek, Sand Creek, Belle Fourche River, Little Missouri River, Little Powder River, Powder River, Tongue River, and Little Bighorn River. Fishing regulations in this area adhere to Statewide Creel Limits and Statewide Regulations, with exceptions outlined below:

Creel and Possession Limits

  • Trout: Six (6) in all lakes and streams within Area 3.
  • Northern Pike: Unlimited harvest in all waters within Area 3, except within Keyhole State Park. Must be killed immediately.

Specific Area 3 Regulations

  • Black Elk Pond in Weston County:

    • Watercraft prohibited.
  • Black Hills Power and Light Osage Pond in Weston County:

    • Use of internal combustion engines in motorized watercraft is prohibited.
  • Bull Creek in Sheridan County:

    • All trout shall be released immediately.
    • Fishing permitted by artificial flies and lures only.
  • Cook Lake in Crook County:

    • Use of internal combustion engines in motorized watercraft is prohibited.
  • Gillette Fishing Lake in Campbell County:

    • Use of internal combustion engines in motorized watercraft is prohibited.
  • Healy Reservoir in Johnson County:

    • Motor in excess of fifteen (15) horsepower prohibited.
  • Keyhole Reservoir (within Keyhole State Park in Crook County):

    • Creel limit on northern pike: Three (3) per day or in possession.
    • Northern pike less than thirty (30) inches must be released immediately.
  • Kleenburn Ponds in Sheridan County:

    • Use of internal combustion engines in motorized watercraft is prohibited.
  • Middle Fork of Powder River in Johnson County:

    • Creel limit on trout: Three (3) per day or in possession.
    • No more than one (1) trout exceeding sixteen (16) inches.
  • Muddy Guard Reservoir No. 1 in Johnson County:

    • Creel limit on trout: One (1) per day or in possession.
    • Trout less than twenty (20) inches must be released immediately.
    • Fishing permitted by artificial flies and lures only.
  • North Sayles Reservoir #1 (on Bud Love WHMA) in Johnson County:

    • Creel limit on trout: One (1) per day or in possession.
    • Trout less than twenty (20) inches must be released immediately.
    • Fishing permitted by artificial flies and lures only.
  • North Tongue River drainage upstream of U.S. Forest Service Road 15 in Sheridan County:

    • All trout shall be released immediately.
    • Fishing permitted by artificial flies and lures only.
  • Park Reservoir in Johnson and Sheridan Counties:

    • Motor in excess of fifteen (15) horsepower prohibited.
  • Ranchester City Reservoir in Sheridan County:

    • Use of internal combustion engines in motorized watercraft is prohibited.
  • Sand Creek in Crook County:

    • Fishing permitted by artificial flies and lures only.
  • Sibley Lake in Sheridan County:

    • Use of internal combustion engines in motorized watercraft is prohibited.
  • Tongue River drainage lakes and streams in Area 3 in Johnson and Sheridan Counties:

    • All walleye and sauger must be kept whole until off the water or ice and done fishing for the day.
  • Tie Hack Reservoir in Johnson County:

    • Use of internal combustion engines in motorized watercraft is prohibited.

Area 3 Regulations: Live Baitfish

In Area 3, the use or possession of live baitfish is generally prohibited, with specific exceptions outlined in this section.

Area 3 Live Baitfish Location A

  • Live baitfish may be used in designated waters under certain conditions:
    • Waters: Keyhole Reservoir and Belle Fourche River proper.
    • Baitfish must be obtained from licensed dealers or seined/trapped from specified waters.
    • Transport of baitfish outside designated areas is prohibited.
    • Designated wild caught live baitfish possession area includes Belle Fourche River drainage and Little Powder River drainage upstream of Cottonwood Creek confluence in Campbell County.

Area 3 Live Baitfish Location B

  • Commercially produced live baitfish may be used in specified waters:
    • Waters: Lake DeSmet, Healy Reservoir in Johnson County, and LAK Reservoir.
    • Baitfish must be obtained from licensed dealers as per regulations.

Area 3 Live Baitfish Location C

  • Use or possession of live baitfish is prohibited in Area 3C.
  • Seining, netting, trapping, or spearing baitfish is allowed in Tongue River and Goose Creek drainages upstream of the Wyoming-Montana state line, but captured baitfish must be killed immediately for use as dead bait.
